We were treated to a double-dose of Springtime Surprise by runDisney last week. Not only did we get a theme reveal about a week earlier than expected (runDisney released the Princess Weekend themes about two weeks before general registration), but they also moved the dates to a week earlier. The 2027 Springtime Surprise will now take place from April 8th to April 11th, which will surely impact those already registered through a charity. There's also no yoga this year, although that's hardly a loss as the only yoga worth signing up for was in front of Cinderella's Castle. No real reason was given for the date change, although speculation was runDisney moved away from the Boston Marathon taking place the Monday after the original dates.
More importantly, we have the themes for Springtime Surprise: "Running Through the Years". While not super-cohesive, all four themes are pretty great on their own. Many people were disappointed to not get a reprise of the Star Wars themes, but it's hard to be disappointed in some new movies and characters getting in on the action.

5k
Representing the 2010s, Wreck It Ralph is the featured player for the Springtime Surprise 5k. Writes runDisney, "How sweet it is! On April 9th, feel the sugar rush during this digitally inspired 3.1-mile run with Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz from the 2012 hit, Wreck-It Ralph. We can (almost) guarantee that Vanellope won’t swipe your medal."
Wreck It Ralph was a great movie, and it is a smart pick with the medal theme. I was excited to see Vanellope on the course for the 2026 Princess Half Marathon, and it'll be interesting if we see other 2010s characters from Monsters University, Frozen, Coco, or one of my favorites, Big Hero 6.

10k
Going back to the 1970s, Robin Hood takes center stage for the 10k. As runDisney puts it, "Golly what a day April 10th will be as you hit your 6.2-mile target on a run hosted by Robin Hood, Prince John and Sir Hiss from 1973’s Robin Hood. Note that robbery and archery are strictly prohibited."
Robin Hood is a true classic, and one of our family's favorites as it was stuck in our minivan's DVD player for a couple years now (I think I have it audibly memorized by now). Robin Hood wearing a medal (perhaps Ralph's medal?) is interesting, and the archery motif is great as well. All I have to say is runDisney better deliver on a Sir Hiss character stop...

10-Miler
Turning back further to the 1950s, Alice in Wonderland is the main theme for the 10-miler. According to runDisney, "On April 11th––a very important date––join Alice, the Cheshire Cat and a garden full of spring flowers for 10 miles inspired by the 1951 sensation, Alice in Wonderland. Be sure to stay on the marked route so you don’t fall down any rabbit holes."
The 1950s represents the second big wave of Disney animated movies, with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Alice in Wonderland. Alice has so many classic characters between Alice, the March Hare, Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, and maybe even Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. The 10-miler course is quick but fun through Epcot and Hollywood Studios, so there should be plenty of space for good characters, including some more classics in the challenge...

Springtime Surprise Challenge
Steamboat Mickey! The cartoon that started everything and changed animation forever as the first cartoon with sound and music, Steamboat Mickey represents the 1920s for the Challenge. The runDisney writeup, "Finish all three races for a total of 19.3 miles and receive a bonus medal featuring classic Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse from 1928’s Steamboat Willie. But please do not attempt to match the cartoon’s 7:47 runtime."
I've never seen a black-and-white Mickey Mouse character, but I imagine it would be crazy popular as a Reunion Lot or character stop representative. The Challenge has failed to sell out on the first day the last few years, but pulling out the original Mickey may move the needle in getting runners to register early in July.
