Getting ready for a runDisney vacation can be a challenge in many respects. You have to sign up for the races, train for the races, and plan an entire Walt Disney World vacation on top of everything. As you get ready to finally embark on your trip, there's one last bit of preparation: the packing! If you're anything like me, the best way to stay organized is by making lists. I make Disney lists for my must-rides, must-eats, and must-sees. For running the Dopey Challenge, you won't want to leave any stone unturned. Or leave anything important behind. Sure, between Fit2Run at Disney Springs and the runDisney Expo you can likely piece together whatever you need, but I don't recommend leaving it to chance. Plus, nothing new on race day! With that said, here's my ideal Dopey Challenge Packing List.
Shoes - As I wrote in my Shoe Strategy post, I recommend at least 2 pairs of running shoes, plus a decently-comfortable pair for walking the parks. If you have the space in your luggage, some Crocs or similar recovery slides for the resort area or pool may be a good item to have on hand.
Socks - 4 pairs of running socks (I typically stick with Feetures), plus make sure any park socks are in good shape as well.
Shorts/Shirts - 4 sets of each. It cannot be stressed enough to test out your gear before race day, especially for costumes or themed outfits. It's great to look good and have a fun outfit - but it won't be fun at mile 16 of the marathon when you realize your singlet's material chafes. For a 5k you can probably get by - for a half marathon or marathon, not so much.
Hat/Headbands - I'm not a big hat guy while running, but my Sprints hat came in handy during the 2025 half marathon when it rained off and on throughout the race. Better safe than sorry.
Sunglasses - I am a big sunglass guy - partial to the fun goodr designs. The sun comes up in a big way in the latter stages of the half marathon and marathon. The trickiest part is figuring out how to carry or store the sunglasses until you need them.
Body Glide or similar anti-chafe balm - IFYKY
Fuel - I would definitely plan on bringing your own fuel of choice for the half marathon and marathon. RunDisney has traditionally only provided Sport Beans and bananas for their races, and that's not nearly enough to comfortably finish the race. Additionally, you should have a plan for carrying said fuel, be it a running belt, vest, or secure pocket. I always carry mine in a pocket on my handheld water bottle, which brings me to...
Extra water source - There are plenty of water and Powerade stops on the course, but as a heavy sweater I prefer to have my own water that I can drink and refill as needed. Just make sure you practice if you wear a vest or belt.
Hydration supplements - During my first Dopey Challenge my Nuun tablets were a lifesaver. Staying well hydrated kept me feeling good and awake and set me up well for the rest of the weekend. I definitely recommend the extra hydration besides water alone.
Running Gloves - A lifesaver if it's cold, I wore my pair of New Balance gloves for every leg of the 2025 Dopey Challenge. If your hands are warm it makes a huge difference during cold weather races. Hot Hands or similar hand warmers are also a great option to bring along.
Throwaway layers - Florida weather is unpredictable, so even if the forecast is on the edge it would be a good idea to bring a couple throwaway hoodies or sweatshirts (Goodwill is a great option). Worst case scenario you don't need them and you can leave them by the start line to get collected and re-donated. Plus, the space you save by losing the throwaway layers can be used for the six race shirts you collect for Dopey.
Mylar blanket - Again, this is a good option for cold weather. I happened to bring my Philadelphia Marathon mylar blanket to my 2025 Dopey Challenge and wrapped up my son before the 5k. He usually runs cold, but on that frigid day I didn't hear a single complaint. You'll need to toss the blanket well before the start line, but if it is cold you should get handed a new runDisney mylar at the finish line.
Bib magnets/protective cover - For the uninitiated, you get two bibs for the Dopey Challenge - a 5k/10k bib and a half marathon/marathon bib. During my first couple marathons I learned that the combination of sweat and spilled water left my bibs hanging onto the meager bobby pins for dear life. To keep your Dopey bibs in good shape across multiple races you'll need something better than bobby pins. Bib magnets work great, and others have used protective plastic sleeves to keep the bibs dry and intact.
Pre-run foods - Since all the races start well before the resort dining options open, you'll need to have a plan for eating prior to the runs. Most of the resorts offer a "runner box" for sale with a bagel, banana, and peanut butter, but if you prefer anything else or if you want to be more economical, you can either travel with food or order groceries upon arrival. If you're staying on-site you should have a coffeemaker for a cup of coffee (yes!) as well as hot water for instant oatmeal, if that's your thing.
Run-friendly snacks - While you are sure to find a plethora of great carb-dense options in the parks, I would highly recommend bringing a variety of snacks to eat on the go. My go-to options are fig bars, crunchy granola bars, or Honey Stinger waffles (bonus: you may get one in your post-race food box).
